EXECUTIVE PRODUCER JULIE PLEC MAKES HER DIRECTORIAL DEBUT — After assigning tasks to each of her friends, Caroline (Candice Accola) attempts to deal with her current situation as reality begins to set in around her. While spending the day with Caroline, Elena (Nina Dobrev) grows concerned when she starts noticing a strange change in her behavior. Meanwhile, Alaric (Matt Davis) becomes wary when Kai (guest star Chris Wood), who has begun experiencing unexpected consequences from the merge, turns to Jo (guest star Jodi Lyn O’Keefe), desperate for her help. Elsewhere, while Bonnie (Kat Graham) finds herself in an unfamiliar situation, Matt (Zach Roerig) and Tyler (Michael Trevino) contemplate a major life change. And when Damon (Ian Somerhalder) offers Caroline advice on how to cope with everything going on around her, it forces him to revisit painful memories involving his own mother. Paul Wesley also stars. Is Enzo going to do anything other than torture Stefan for the rest of the season on The Vampire Diaries?

Yes and no. In his attempts to torture Stefan, Enzo “sort of insinuates himself into Sarah Salvatore’s [Tristin Mays] life,” Julie Plec teases, adding, “but Sarah’s pretty.” Does that mean it will turn romantic? “Let’s just say that one of our inspirations for this story is Les Liaisons Dangereuses, like that John Malkovich, Dangerous Liasons kind of vibe where you get into something for one reason but then you maybe get surprised by the outcome.” But don’t get too attached to the potential couple just yet. Plec promised that Enzo, in his typical fashion, is more than capable of screwing it up.

"We're actually saying goodbye to one of our characters in the 14th episode," executive producer Julie Plec. "Jeremy is going to art school. We'll see what his next path and journey is, but Steven R. McQueen is all grown-up and ready to move on, so we're saying goodbye to him as a series regular. We got him a cake and dressed as superheroes and gave him a big party!" Plec adds about the sendoff.

THE MERGE — When Liv (guest star Penelope Mitchell) and Luke’s (guest star Chris Brochu) father arrives to town to celebrate their birthday, they try and convince him to let Jo (guest star Jodi Lyn O’Keefe) and Kai (guest star Chris Wood) take their place in the merge ceremony. After Tyler (Michael Trevino) finds out that the merge is happening sooner than he expected, he urges Liv to let him talk to her father. Meanwhile, after Caroline’s (Candice Accola) plan to cure her mother takes an unexpected and devastating turn, Elena (Nina Dobrev), Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Damon (Ian Somerhalder) gather at the hospital, while Jo attempts to save Sheriff Forbes’ (guest star Marguerite MacIntyre) life. Lastly, with the merge set to take place, Damon’s risky plan quickly sends things spiraling out of control, forcing one of the twins to take matters into their own hands. * As Caroline attempts to find a supernatural cure for Sheriff Forbes’ cancer, Stefan will attempt to rebuild his shattered relationship with the former Miss Mystic Falls.

* While Bonnie fights to return to the present — she will be back with a “badass” new attitude — Jeremy will make several major life changes, including applying to art school.

* Annie Wersching (24) will join the cast as a “strong, beautiful” woman named Lily.

* Lastly, there there will be a Gemini merger, which means Jo, Kai, Luke and Liv are all in pretty serious danger of not existing anymore. (Is it bad that we’d save Kai first?)

He’s not going to lift his cloaking spell until he gets exactly what he wants — and he wants to merge.

"Bonnie was trying to see the silver lining in her situation and get out and enjoy a day where she could celebrate and reminisce and not feel sorry for herself. CONTROLLING YOUR MAGIC — More powerful than ever, Kai (guest star Chris Wood) holds Elena (Nina Dobrev) captive while he learns to control his newly acquired magic. At the Salvatore mansion, Liv (guest star Penelope Mitchell) and Alaric (Matt Davis) try to prepare Jo (guest star Jodi Lyn O'Keefe) for the impending merge ceremony with Kai, but they quickly realize Jo is weaker than they thought. After bringing Sheriff Forbes (guest star Marguerite MacIntyre) home from the hospital, Caroline (Candice Accola) travels with Stefan (Paul Wesley) to North Carolina in search of a cure for her mother's cancer. Meanwhile, Stefan, who has his own intentions for traveling to North Carolina, is caught off guard when Enzo (Michael Malarkey) shows up demanding to know what Stefan is hiding.
