Julie Plec On The Big Spoiler Twist

At The Vampire Diaries‘ PaleyFest panel in Los Angeles last week, fans were treated to an early look at the just-aired episode of the heart-pounding series, and, as a result, were made aware of the shocking reveal that came at the end of the fantastic hour. [Don't read on if you haven't seen the episode! Seriously!]
The crowd was understandably floored to find out that Alaric (Matt Davis) is the person responsible for the string of murders in Mystic Falls, and equally stunned when it was revealed his killing streak is a result of his magic ring. (The ring begins to have bad consequences after being used to resurrect a person several times.) And boss Julie Plec told the crowd during an un-streamed portion of the panel, the bombshell is just the tip of the twist iceberg!
“It definitely has implications for Jeremy and for Elena,” she said. “[Elena realizes] not only that the ring may not be completely trusted to bring them back to life, but it might actually contribute in allowing a darker element of that person to take hold. Jeremy is now wildly unprotected. Elena is a character who is all about saving the ones she holds most dear, and now has to deal with her guardian in a difficult place and possibly her brother suffering the consequences of a ring that used to be so reliable. We’ll see how it all plays out.”
“The next few episodes are going to be shocking,” added Davis, who earlier that day told EW that he was excited that a payoff for Alaric’s storyline was on the way.
For Plec, among the most tragic aspects of the twist was the fact that the ring holds such a deeper meaning to Elena. “In the second episode, he tried to refuse that ring and Elena asked him to take it back and be part of her family and now there’s a consequence for that,” said Plec. “Alaric is a character who is very near and dear to all of us, and Matt Davis as an actor is very near and dear to us…Getting to explore a darker side is both exciting for a character and exciting for an actor. And we wanted to showcase that.”
So can Alaric be saved/stopped? “I hope so,” said Plec.

Paul Wesley Teases "Big Time" Hope and Heartbreak for Stefan and Elena

Prepare yourselves, Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Elena (Nina Dobrev) fans: your ship is about to get rocked!

The Vampire Diaries finally returns to us tonight (wheeee!) and we feel like we should warn some of you now: the love triangle takes a backseat. Not that you'll probably notice as "1912" offers up one of the series' most shocking twists ever. But fret not, romance lovers: season three's final string of episodes will be chock-full of shipper goodness. How do we know this?
We chatted with Paul Wesley about what's ahead for Stefan and Elena, including a "heartbreaking" conversation, and the return of Stefan from seasons past. Plus, will Stefan be getting a new love interest in the love triangle swings in Damon's (Ian Somerhalder) favour?

In tonight's episode, viewers will see Stefan begin his battle with moderation, with Damon leading the human blood drinking-train. "Damon tries to become that sort of mentor in a way in getting Stefan off the path of extremity and teaching him moderation," Wesley teases. "It all kind of comes to a head and it doesn't work out too well."
Though Stefan will not have an easy time with it, Wesley says the process will lead him back to Elena. "The more he deals with moderation, the closer he grows to Elena. He was so involved in his own darkness, he didn't have any time for romance. As the episodes progress, the audience is going to see Stefan maybe becoming more like he was season one and two, sort of the romantic lead hero."

Still, Wesley stresses that Stefan will always have that dark side ready to consume him at any moment. "What's really important is to make sure that Stefan always has a flaw and that he always has that potential darkness because I think the minute we make Stefan the same Stefan as season one, it becomes a little predictable."

While Wesley says there is still "big time" hope for Stefan and Elena's relationship, he gave us a little insight into an upcoming scene in episode 18 that may just break a few hearts. (Stefan and Elena scenes sometimes have a tendency to do that, don't they?)
"It's one of those things were they look at each other say, 'Hey, maybe this is too late. Maybe it's too late to actually salvage this.' I think it's two people who really love one another very deeply getting to a place of resolution about the fact that there may be no hope," he explains. "They have to conquer that. And I'm not saying they do because they certainly don't. I'm filming episode 21 right now and it's not like they're a lovey-dovey couple. But what I'm saying is the more truthful they are about what has happened, the more grim it is. But at the same time, it's more intimate because they're sharing these truths with one another."

Since there is a 50-50 chance Stefan could end up the loser (for now) in the epic love triangle, Wesley says he'd like to see a new love interest for the youngest Salvatore brother. "I think it's really important. I don't want to say that and anger anyone, but it's really important for Stefan to have another love interest," he tells us. "At least just for a moment or two. I really believe that every character on this show needs to have another love interest at point or another, including Elena and Stefan."
Wesley's suggestion?  "I think Stefan should potentially have a love interest with someone who's maybe just as dark as he is at times."

Matt Davis Interview

Where do you see things going with Meredith? Is Alaric ready to move on...with a suspected killer?I don't know! I absolutely love working with Torrey DeVitto. We have a great time. So whatever it is they have planned, I hope it continues to develop.

It seems like he's destined to forever have his heart broken.
It seems so, right?

Is it just us, or do you think there's something between Alaric and Elena, too?You know, I keep pitching that to executive producer Julie Plec. I tell her, "If you want a ratings extravaganza, have an Alaric-Elena moment." It would be so hot!

Seriously, he's always there for her. He's kind of needy...He's living in her house. She's kind of needy. I am telling you, that would be ratings gold.

If Alaric had to pick one Salvatore brother to kill, who would it be? It would probably be Damon. It would be some sort of a lovers' quarrel. [Laughs]

Have you had a favorite kill so far?I haven't been doing much killing lately, so I would have to say that my favorites are whenever Damon kills me.

And that happens so often! How many times has Alaric died already?I don't know, five or six. It's like a regular thing.

How is it working on a show with such a high mortality rate? It's funny, there are elements of absurdity that you have to overlook as an actor. Just because so many people die or go missing...they develop major characters and then, done. It's like being on Survivor!

Interview with Cassidy Freeman

What was it like playing Sage in the 1900s?
The Vampire Diaries does period in a very beautiful way. They have such attention to detail, in terms of costumes, hair and makeup. It was a joy.
Sage, in a way, is responsible for molding the Damon character into what he is now. Is she someone who helped him for the better?
I think she helped him for the better. I think Damon is who he is in a way or maybe she was the catalyst for him to become who he wanted to be. In any event, she definitely inspired his way of being a vampire, which I don’t think the story would be here without that.
What causes her to target him specifically?
I think she saw something in him. I think she was attracted to something about him and she saw possibility in him. She saw his tendency toward being that kind of vampire that’s so free and seductive. She that seed and she wanted to help it grow.
Sage will also be seen in present day. What events transpire to make her reappear in Mystic Falls?
Yea, Mystic Falls is kind of out of the way. She comes back in search of Finn, the Original who’s her true love. That’s the real reason for her coming back but she definitely has more to do when she gets there.
What is Sage and Damon’s initial meeting in present day like?
He’s skeptical and wonders why she’s back but I think he’s happy to see her. They didn’t leave on bad terms by any means.
What can you reveal about Sage in the coming episodes?
Obviously Sage is in the books, even though she’s a man. Sage is somebody who pushes along the story of the books and really helps flush out the original storyline of The Vampire Diaries. She’s going to help that storyline along and it’s also important for fans to see where Damon started.
You played Tess on Smallville for several seasons. Could you describe the differences or similarities between Tess and Sage?
Coming back to the CW was really fun. Strangely enough, Tess and Sage do have similarities. They’re both strong women, they both know what they want and they go after it. But I think the difference between them is, where Sage is very open and emotionally free and able to express herself, Tess is more tight and buttoned-up and scared to be who she really was.
Was there a specific moment during filming that stood out for you?
There’s a scene in one of the present-day episodes where Sage really gets to show her emotional side and I don’t think I’m allowed to say for what reason but it was a really great scene to show her freedom. The boxing scenes [in “1912”], they were so fun. To be able to go through how much do you show that she’s a vampire, how much do you show that she’s a badass woman who can box.

Cassidy Freeman and Paul Wesley Tease Upcoming Episodes

The Vampire Diaries returns tonight with a flashback episode to 1912 when boxing vampire, Sage (Cassidy Freeman) teaches Damon (Ian Somerhalder) how to choose victims for maximum enjoyment - a lesson which also leads to the creation of Ripper Stefan.
Was it a platonic mentorship then? "I wonder if Damon is Platonically involved with anyone. Thats my question Freeman laughs "I wouldn't say they have a burning love for one another but there's definately sexual tension."
It would appear to bubble over when Sage, who's heard that her one true love, Finn (Caspar Zafer) is now out of his coffin, comes to Mystic Falls on March 22nd Episode to search for him. A recent promo for the shows Spring run featured a steamy shot of Sage and Damon in his famed shower. "I can't actually tell you how many of my absolutely grown women friends  squealed like teenagers when they heard that I was gonna be in this show,” Freeman says. “So I don’t doubt that his bathroom, and more importantly his shower, is a place of interest. So I felt very fortunate.”
A promo shot for the March 22 episode shows the two of them dancing, another of viewers’ favorite activities for Damon. “We’re party animals. We’re that friend that always comes to town and you end up drinking too much, and then you don’t really remember it the next day but you know you had a good time. That’s the kind of friends that we are, I think.”
Her visit takes an interesting turn, though. That recent promo also shows naked Damon and Rebekah in bed, with a clothed Sage caressing Rebekah’s face. “They’re all, ‘Shower scene, ambiguous sexual orientation scene, boxing in 1912 — do you want the part?’ And I’m all, ‘That’s not a question. That’s an offer,’” Freeman jokes. “It’s definitely a manipulating time. In the present day, I’m trying to help Damon figure out what Rebekah’s up to, and let’s just say that we’ll use any tactic that we can.”
We assume there plan doesn’t go well, since we’ve seen promo shots of Rebekah torturing Damon, and Sage looking distraught in the March 29 episode. ”That shot has nothing to do with Rebekah or Damon, but I am very sad,” Freeman says. (We’re guessing it has something to do with self-loathing Finn, who, you’ll recall, is helping his mother Esther try to kill him and his Original siblings. To save Elena, the Salvatore Brothers thwarted her plan by having Damon turn Bonnie’s mother Abby into a vampire so Esther couldn’t channel the power of the Bennett bloodline. Rebekah and Klaus, however, just learned there’s apparently another white oak tree that can be used to kill Originals, so they’re still in danger.)
The introduction of Sage comes at an interesting time, of course, as Damon is trying to help Stefan through his detox. We found out in the last episode that Stefan hasn’t had a drop of human blood since the night he took Elena to the bridge where her parents died. “I think Sage’s idea is that of pleasure and that of embracing being a vampire. So anytime that Stefan comes in with his do all-good attitude, it just doesn’t click,” Freeman says. “I don’t think she’s necessarily anti-Stefan or tries to push him too hard. I think she just sees a lot of future in Damon, especially back in 1912, where he could be the kind of vampire that she is and she can be a mentor to him. So she focuses more on being able to craft the Damon that we all know out of who he was in 1912, rather than worrying about Stefan too much.”
Now we know why exec producer Julie Plec told us she wanted #TeamSalvatore to trend on Twitter (which it did). “We’ve been so contentious and hostile with one another that when we have these rare moments of friendship, I think it reminds the audience that these two guys are also an integral part of the triangle,” Wesley says. “It’s not just them both being in love with Elena. It’s that they love each other as well.”In 1912, the Salvatore brothers reunite at a family funeral after being estranged for 50 years. “In that flashback, I’m almost courting his friendship, and in the present day, he’s almost courting my friendship,” Wesley says. “Back in the day, he was resentful of me, and in the present day, I’ve become very resentful of him. The episode is nicely interwoven in that regard.”
Tonight’s episode also features a bonding moment between Elena and Matt. Should Stefan consider Matt a threat to the show’s central love triangle? “I think he absolutely should be a threat,” Wesley says. “I think there’s a level of simplicity to Matt. He’s a good, uncomplicated kind of guy. At the end of the day, Stefan and Damon both bring a huge bag of complication and things don’t go very well when Damon and Stefan are around. So I do believe that Elena should have some sort of a relationship with someone who is not supernatural. I think for sure that’s a threatening thing, to a degree.”
As for Stefan’s relationship with Elena, there are promo shots from the March 29 episode, “The Murder of One,” of them walking through the woods carrying weapons — him a stake and her a crossbow — and them deep in conversation with him appearing to gently touch her face. “The two of them are on a bit of mission, but during that mission, they sort of divert and talk about their relationship and the reality of what they’ve been through. It’s a good story-line plot point that allows the two of them to be in a close situation and allows for a little bit of intimacy,” Wesley says. Like, verbal intimacy or something more? He laughs. “Verbal. Intimacy in an emotional way,” he says.
Looking ahead to the end of the season, Wesley says he still hasn’t read the script for the finale, but that he’s been doing scuba-diving training for a planned underwater sequence in the episode. We assume that means we’re still on target to see a flashback to the car crash that killed Elena’s parents before the series began (good Samaritan Stefan was only able to save Elena). He does offer one tease: “I think audiences can look forward to Stefan and Elena getting one step closer by the end of the season to potentially reuniting,” he says. One stepcloser to potentially reuniting? That was carefully worded! “I’m very good at that sort of cagey answer,” he laughs

Why do Sage and Rebekah have a tense history?

When The Vampire Diaries returns on tonight, the show's newest character, Sage, won't just reunite with old friend Damon, but with past adversary Rebekah as well.

"They have a tension and a history there," Claire Holt (Rebekah) told TVGuide.com from the show's Atlanta set. "You find out Sage is looking for Finn, Rebekah's brother, so there's definitely a bit of a hate vibe going on."

Ian Somerhalder 'bombed' his first TVD audition

Can you imagine anyone else other than Ian Somerhalder playing Damon Salvatore on The Vampire Diaries? No? Neither can I! But Mr Smolderhalder nearly lost the part after blowing his first audition.

The actor, 33, said during the CW show's panel at Paleyfest in Beverly Hills Saturday, "The process of booking a television show is an extensively nerve-racking, nail-biting, awful experience. You can believe in yourself so much but when you realize you want something in life, the stakes are raised."

"I knew this was my role. I wanted this role -- I knew I could do it," he said. "You go through a series of testing, you meet the directors and producers and writers, and then go through a testing phase, and then you get an offer. Then you go and test for the studio -- in this case Warner Brothers -- and then you test for the network."
Unfortunately, Somerhalder failed impressed the network. "Whether it was too much coffee, that B12 shot I gave myself, who knows?" he said. "I bombed it."

Screenwriter Kevin Williamson, took Somerhalder aside and said, "'That wasn't good, was it?'" Somerhalder recalled. "I said, 'No.' And he said, 'Just go back and do what you know you need to do.' And I did. I did what I thought I needed to do, and I left feeling awful. Guess what? It wasn't good enough."

"I had to go back and re-test because all our big boss, (CBS president) Les Moonves, did not buy it, the fact that I was Damon. And I wanted to jump off of a building," Ian said. After seeing another actor waiting to read for the part, he thought to himself: "You know what? Screw this. This is mine. This is not his."

"I went in and did it and oddly enough, ended up getting the call," said Somerhalder "But it was after 10 days of virtual hell. And you don't always win. But every time you lose, you get better."

Paul Wesley tells us why it's so good to be bad and spills on Stefan's response to Damon/Elena

This season on "The Vampire Diaries," we finally got to meet The Ripper, Stefan's bloodthirsty, ruthless alter-ego who had previously only been legend. We're not sure what it says about us that we found this sociopath version of our hero far more compelling than his usual compassionate martyr self, but we definitely did.

When it was revealed that Stefan had quietly quit drinking human blood (and was slowly reverting back to being the kind of guy who finds himself near tears on the regular) we couldn't help but be a little disappointed. We miss his swagger -- and we aren't alone in that.

"Yeah, yeah, it bums me out," Paul Wesley told us, calling from the car on his way to the airport for one of his usual flights between the set in Atlanta and his home in LA. "It does. You know it does. I really just enjoy [Ripper Stefan] a lot more. You play a vampire on screen, and when you have to play a good vampire, you have to fight your nature. Good Stefan doesn't feel as natural in terms of what I want to be doing on screen, and what I want to be saying. I feel a little stifled, myself, whenever he's resisting the urge to do vampiresque things."

In this week's episode we'll definitely see Stefan resisting the urge to drink blood. His withdrawal symptoms are surprisingly human for most of the episode -- he's twitchy and restless, and he fills the void with booze.

In the past, Paul has equated Stefan's blood issues to a drug addiction, but in this episode, we'll learn that Stefan trying to quit blood is less like a human trying to quit heroin... and more like a human trying to quit water. Blood is essential to a vampire's existence, so Stefan's detox isn't going to be anything resembling easy -- for himself, for his brother, or for Elena.

On Thursday, fans will get a little bit more insight into where Elena stands in regard to both Stefan and Damon when she confides in Matt about her relationships with the Salvatores. It's a rare moment where her guard is down and she's not trying to deny any feelings either way. Elena comes off as more self-aware than she has in quite a while.

As Damon and Elena have grown closer this season, the Stefan/Elena fans have become increasingly worried (and increasingly vocal). While we definitely have not seen the end of the "Delena" attraction, Paul tells us that fans waiting for Stefan and Elena to reconcile shouldn't give up hope.

"I think they have something to look forward to, to a degree," he says. "I don't think it's going to be like a walk in the park, but I think that at this point, they're open to a whole boatload of possibilities. You know how when a relationship ends, you might think 'Oh, these people will never get back together! They've been through so much!' But after a year, after two years, you meet again, and all of a sudden, you can forget all that. I don't know if they're going to get back together, but it's more of a possibility now than it was seven episodes ago, absolutely."

Oddly enough, the relationship that's most important in Stefan's life at the moment is his relationship with his brother. Despite the fact that Elena is more available than ever, Stefan and Damon are closer, now, than they've been since 1864.

Of course their relationship will continue to have its mercurial moments, but fans can expect Stefan and Damon to make an effort to remain allies for a while. This week, we'll see Damon go to drastic measures to help his brother out, and we'll see them discuss Elena honestly and without much animosity.

"I think they've come to this silent understanding of the fact that they both are in love with the same girl," Paul laughs. "They just allow it. To be honest, it's almost like Stefan allowed Damon to step in. I mean, that was Stefan's girl, and now Damon is suddenly a real factor, he's really in the picture. I think Stefan feels like he deserves this, in a way. He kind of abandoned her, in his mind."

As the season continues, we'll see Damon and Elena on a collision course for each other. The inevitability of their relationship isn't lost on Stefan, either. What you won't see, though, is Stefan giving anyone an ultimatum.

"This is the case for any relationship: you can't force anything," Paul says. "You have to let things happen naturally. Stefan, for his part, thinks that if Elena needs to explore the Damon side of things, she should be allowed to do that, and if she decides that Damon is indeed the guy she wants to be with, then I think Stefan would at that point be okay with losing her, because it means she wasn't the right girl for him anyway." He laughs. "I mean, otherwise, it'd be pretty pathetic. I don't want him to be pathetic. He's cooler than that, right?"

Nina Dobrev teases Elena's decade dance partner and who else is suiting up?

Every year, "The Vampire Diaries" celebrates the people who actually made it through the year alive with a fun Mystic Falls High Decade Dance, and Season 3 is no different! Episode 20 will bring us back to the dance floor for a little mayhem inspired by the 1920s, which is sure to bring back some memories for Stefan, Rebekah, and Klaus.

Of course, despite that, it's Elena who is always the center of attention at these Mystic Falls soirees. When we caught up with Nina Dobrev at PaleyFest's evening with the cast and executive producer, we had to grill her for spoilers about the big night.

As always, though, Nina is an excellent secret-keeper, and she didn't want to give too much away! "Elena will dance with one of the Salvatores," she teased. "I'll just say that."

Will she and Damon end their little rift and hit the floor, speakeasy style? Or will Stefan finally admit to Elena that he still cares in time for a dance amidst the inevitable chaos?

"You'll have to watch and see!" Nina told us. We know who we hope to see her dance with. Let us know your opinion in the comments below!

As for who else will attend the dance, we can reveal one special guest: Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) will return from Denver in time to suit up for the big night! The kid looks good in a jacket and tie. We're not sure whether Bonnie (Kat Graham) will be on his arm, but she won't be missing the dance.

Graham did reveal that fans will see Bonnie have a love interest who is "decent" at some point. "Yes, you will!" she told fans at the panel. Since there haven't been discussions about Season 4 yet, we can only assume that she'll be getting said love interest soon.

We're hoping for a Bonnie/Jeremy reconciliation -- maybe Denver helped him get over his ghosts? -- but we're also interested to see how she relates to Abby's foster son, Jamie, when he returns for episode 17.

Julie Plec Spills More Clues On Season 3 at PaleyFest

Can we expect reconciliation between Elena and Stefan soon?We can expect movement, we can expect breakthroughs, we can expect honest conversations and we can expect some frustration as they continue to try to rediscover if those feelings that were so strong in the beginning still exist. Did they go away and has Stefan ruined it forever? Or does Elena still have a willingness and an ability to love him? In the midst of all that, we'll confront the question of what exactly has evolved and transpired in the Damon and Elena friendship that's gotten so far this year. The rest of the season is going to be circling around those questions.

Damon made it very clear that he is much better at being the bad guy than Stefan is. Will he now give up on Elena? Will he turn bad again? The beauty of Damon is he never really gives up. He acts out, he takes a stand, he has opinions, but when all is said and done, if brother's in a crisis, if girl's in a crisis, if the world is in a crisis, Damon inevitably can't help himself and he's got to find his way back in. This week's episode really shows that perfect balance of Damon being nasty and sarcastic and angry, and yet really illuminating at his core that he is a very heroic person. It's the constant Damon evolution.

Alaric (Matt Davis) was shot by Meredith (Torrey DeVitto) in the previous episode. What can you tease about his future?Alaric, with his tragic and unfortunate luck with the ladies, has just found himself nearly murdered by a human. Had she aimed the gun one inch to the right, he probably would be dead right now. A little spoiler alert, but of the duh variety: We will actually see Alaric again and he'll find himself in this week's episode caught right smack in the center of this murder investigation. We'll start to get a lot of answers about what's going on, and who's behind what and who is going to take the fall for the serial killings that are going down in the town.

Now that it's been revealed there's another white oak tree, how will that change the direction of the rest of the season? The discovery that there was another tree planted in absence of the original one that was burnt down, that definitely sets Rebekah (Claire Holt) and Klaus (Joseph Morgan) on edge a little. They just temporarily defeated their mother, who was trying to annihilate them, so they couldn't even enjoy that victory for a short minute before they learned that there's another weapon out there. That being said, right now they're the only ones who know that that weapon is out there. We'll see how long Rebekkah is able to hold onto that secret. The answer is probably not very long. We'll see what Damon does to get a hold of that information and to figure out what she's snooping around about and why.

Abby's transition obviously won't go as smoothly as Caroline's did. How will Caroline (Candice Accola) help Bonnie's mother through this? The beauty of Caroline is that a control freak in her human life became a very, very, very well controlled vampire when all those things got magnified. Nobody else is blessed with that kind of obsessive, compulsive, dedication to perfection as Caroline. With Abby (Persia White), what we'll see is that a witch is connected to the Earth, and when you turn a witch into a vampire, she's no longer a witch, so it's losing a part of yourself. It's not just losing your humanity, it's losing what really connected your soul to God, if you want to get religious about it. It's not going to be easy for her or Bonnie (Katerina Graham), because there's no spell she can whip up to help. It's, "How do I help my mother here, who I don't know very well, who left me? We just barely got our relationship going, now how do I help her find her true self in all this tragedy?"

Elena's friends have made it clear that other people end up suffering so that she can be saved. Will that weigh on her heavily when the show returns?Yeah, the biggest burden that Elena has to bear, frankly, is that she herself is an incredibly selfless person. She very much wants to take care of and protect the people that she loves, and yet, because ultimately she loves so deeply and so thoroughly, she has created a circle of friends who love that deeply right in return and are, in their own way, selfless and willing to sacrifice themselves for her. It's a little battle of, "Hey, wait a second! I was willing to jump off a cliff." "No, I was!" It all comes down to one of the big central themes in this show, which is loyalty and love and the friendship and bonds of family, and what you're willing to do for the people that are important to you. In a situation like this, with these kids in Mystic Falls where the stakes are high every day, there's a lot of ways that can go. Lately, it seems like it's been going in the disfavor of Elena's friends and she's going to have to deal with that.

Last year's finale had a huge element of danger. Is this one emotionally grounded or will there be more danger? It hasn't been put on the page yet, but the finale this year is like a combo platter of the finales from Season 1 and Season 2 in that the mythology and the villain are going to continue to drive us to the end of the season, but emotionally, there's a lot going on in the characters' journeys. Just breaking this story I probably cried four or five times, got a few chills, got very excited, got nervous about how we're going to do it. There's a lot of story to tell and not a lot of time to tell it in. But fingers crossed on what I think is going to be really good.

PaleyFest Interviews

Here are a few of the interviews that took place before the panel...

5 things from '1912' without giving too much away...

As you already know, the episode takes us back to 1912, when Damon and Stefan return to Mystic Falls for a funeral, after nearly half a century away from their home. Here are a few other little tidbits we can tell you.

1. Alaric wakes up in jail after his encounter with Meredith and her gun. (Come on, you didn't think he'd get killed off yet, right? It's not even May sweeps.) He's healed from the wound she left in his chest, and Sheriff Forbes has some major questions for him.

2. Matt and Elena, teen detective team extraordinaire, get stuck in a closet together. In fact, this episode has a ton of great Matt-and-Elena bonding moments. He finally asks her what Stefan had that he didn't, back in early Season 1, and her answer to that question is completely unexpected and refreshing.

3. We'll meet Sage, the vampire who was essentially Damon's "Lexi," teaching him the ways of the vampire world in 1912. But you knew that. What you'll also discover is her surprising connection to the Original Family, which adds an interesting twist to any future involvement in present-day Mystic Falls. (And makes us re-think the photo of her crying from "A Murder of One.")

4. Damon and Stefan spend nearly the entire episode together -- today and in 1912.In the present day, the boys get together for a some brotherly bonding (read: day drinking) but their fun is cut short as Stefan grows more agitated, "freaking out" from his blood withdrawal symptoms. Additionally, Elena pays them a visit at a rather inopportune time, which could change their relationships a bit moving forward. Back in 1912, we see a tipping point between them that explains why Stefan and Damon had nothing to do with each other in the '20s. Every time we think we have the Salvatores' relationship issues figured out...

5. You will find out the identity of that serial killer that's been on a council rampage this season, once and for all.

As for what you won't see: Bonnie, Caroline, and Klaus aren't in this episode. (Neither are Jeremy or Tyler, obviously.) Bonnie and Caroline are helping Abby through her transition, and Klaus is probably off drawing pictures of farm animals.

PaleyFest Highlights

Some Season 3 hints given during the panel...

Damon and Rebekah revisited: In the March 29 episode titled “The Murder of One,” “Damon does something really crappy to Rebekah and hell hath no fury like a woman scorned,” Plec teased to the eager crowd. (An image popped up recently where Rebekah is seen torturing a bloodied, tied up and shirtless Damon.)  Ian warns that while Damon was clearly a bad boy in season 1 in particular, the “Originals have an appetite for destruction” and apparently they’re out to make trouble. “Hell hath no fury,” Julie warned about Rebekah.
Esther’s plan to kill her children resurfaces: Thought Esther was gone for good? Not so fast, says Plec. “Esther’s plan to take out her children will be revisited,” she revealed.  Despite Esther’s spell being disrupted in episode 15 (the last episode before the break), that was not the last we’ve seen of the Original family or Esther’s plan to try and destroy her children. There’s still “a whole other chapter to that story”.
Katherine is staying away – for nowWhen asked whether Katherine will make an appearance before season’s end, Plec – sort of – squashed discussions for the time being. According to her, if Klaus is still in Mystic Falls, Katherine will be far, far away.   If she returns to Mystic Falls, she’ll be putting her life in danger. No matter what Katherine feels for Damon and Stefan, her instinct for self-preservation is far more important.
Girl power: Kat Graham teased that in coming episodes, viewers will see more scenes between Bonnie and Caroline. “You’ll see a lot more of Bonnie and Caroline working together a lot,” she shared.
Mystic Falls death on the horizon?Since season 1, viewers have endured the deaths of Vicki and aunt Jenna, but could there be another pivotal offing in the near future? “I don’t know,” Plec responded when asked whether everyone this season survives.
Elena before the Salvatores came into focus: At the moment, producers are eyeing actors to play Elena’s adoptive parents (and Jeremy’s biological ones), revisiting the moment of the fatal car accident that killed them and introduced Stefan into the fold.  Julie said that “we’re talking about having a flashback as we get to the end of the season that shows us Elena’s life before she had vampires in it. That would involve her parents, obviously. But it’s not written yet, so we’ll see where that leads.
Bonnie getting some love: Graham was coy, but hinted that Bonnie will meet someone who doesn’t die.
Elena as a vampire? An avid reader of the L.J. Smith novels prefaced her question by saying that Elena in the books was turned into a vampire. Three seasons into the television show, there are no signs that the producers are going in that direction. Will they at some point? “We’ll see,” Plec replied.
Stefan’s Journey: Julie said that Stefan is still on a journey throughout this season. Basically, Damon and Stefan each began the show as a villain and a hero, but in their core they are both light and dark. Essentially, their journey is a battle for them both. Damon tries to resist his urges to be good and pure, while Stefan tries to resist his more evil tendencies. Ian Somerhalder said that “Damon and Stefan have equal capabilities of good and evil”. Julie doesn’t believe that Stefan can go back to the man he was at the beginning of The Vampire Diaries. But “he’s still Stefan...he’s still pure, strong, loyal, full of love, and full of light”. But he will still have to find a balance within himself and find a way to function as both a vampire and a good man. “Damon is no more good than Stefan is evil” and apparently the brother’s relationship is the true love story. Paul Wesley said that, as an actor, he does enjoy playing the darker side of Stefan, but he also enjoys Stefan’s inner turmoil and his journey.
Damon-Elena-Stefan Love Triangle: Will the triangle come to a head by the end of the season? “It’s going to come to a head - maybe not THE head - but a head for sure,” Julie shared. She reminisced about the beautiful love story that Elena and Stefan had at the beginning of the series. But Stefan’s absence and his subsequent bad behavior caused Damon and Elena to grow closer to each other. Basically, for Elena, the whole love triangle debate is all part of growing up. Julie said that before the end of the season “Elena will ask herself ‘who do I care for?’.” Nina Dobrev joked that maybe Elena needs to travel to Europe and meet some new boys who won’t try to kill her.
