Spoiler From E! Online - 20th October 2012

Any scoop on Phoebe Tonkin's character onTVD? Can't wait to see her back on TV!

We chatted with the CW hit's gorgeous new lady wolf about her character Hayley and Tonkin tells us that viewers can expect to see her go up against Klaus. "She kind of speaks before she thinks, especially to people that are probably a little bit dangerous," she teases. "I think her mouth could get her into trouble…possibly!" Unfortunately, Tonkin won't be sharing scenes with her real-life BFF Claire Holt, who plays Rebekah on the show, as we're hearing the Original vamp will be absent for several episodes. (You can blame her bro Klaus for that.)

Grace Phipps On Her First Appearance

"The Vampire Diaries" has some fresh blood this year, and we promise you're going to love her. In last week's premiere, you met Pastor Young, the fanatical preacher who blew up the entire Founder's Council in a suicide mission that's sure to have dire repercussions. Before he did, though, he wrote a letter -- to his daughter, April.

Grace Phipps plays the 16-year-old spitfire, who returns to Mystic Falls after a few years away to attend her father's funeral. When we first meet her, she's worried that the entire town will resent her father for not getting his gas gauges checked ... because, of course, the police have dismissed the tragedy as a gas leak.

A human orphan who is about to be sucked into vampire madness, April is a little bit Season 1 Elena, with the sarcastic humor of our dearly departed Anna. "I've done a lot of work with Nina, which has been fun," Phipps tells Zap2it. "April really, really looks up to Elena, so that's been really fun to play with. She kind of mirrors her a little bit. April grew up with Elena babysitting her, so they're very close."

Like many of her Mystic Falls cohorts, April now has no family to speak of, and Elena takes her under her wing. "Since she doesn't have a role model right now, she looks to Elena," Phipps says. Still, despite the horrifying circumstances surrounding her, April keeps a brave face.

"What's actually really fun to play about April, and what drew me to her when I first read the part, is that she's not a depressed person. She's not a person who goes around blaming. I mean, she's 16, so you're not entirely stable at that point, you're a teenager, but she's not a tragic person, she just got thrust into a tragic situation. That's what's really fun to play," she explains. "There's a conflict between the person that she wants to be and the situation that she's in."

As for romance, "There is a love interest," Phipps tells us coyly. When we ask whether there's just one love interest, she scoffs, "Let's not talk about geometry yet!"

Phipps brings a great new energy to the cast, while April shifts the dynamic of the show a bit. Now, Elena isn't concerned about saving herself all the time -- she's got a new, innocent person in town who means a lot to her, and keeping April safe begins to take priority. As we'll see in tonight's episode, "Memorial," keeping April safe is much easier said than done thanks to a new hunter in town.

Zach Roerig on Matt, Rebekah and Season 4

Matt Donovan may be the most unlucky kid in a town full of unlucky kids, but all these years later, he's still our favorite -- and this year, things might be looking up for the quarterback-slash-busboy. That is, as long as he can get over the overwhelming feelings of guilt he's experiencing after Elena sacrificed her own life to save his.

In last week's season premiere, Matt practically begged Stefan to let him die, and we can't really blame him. For a kid who's just trying to make enough money to keep the lights on in his house, his first love's transition into a vampire is beyond the just-deal-with-it realm. Now, with the added burden of Elena's "death" weighing on him, he's feeling particularly despondent and useless.

Hopefully, though, the combination of last week's tough-love pep talk from Stefan and a touching moment of unexpected heroism in tonight's episode, "Memorial," will get Matt back on his feet. "Memorial" will allow Matt, and the rest of the gang, a moment to grieve what they've lost, and it's well-earned after a few hellish semesters. In the meantime, though, Matt probably owes Stefan a thank-you.

"That's an interesting question, how much does Matt owe Stefan," Zach says. "I don't know if it's a question of whether he owes Stefan, or if he just owes Elena. I think that's going to be Matt's biggest struggle, starting off the season. Just the guilt, and why him, why would Stefan -- even if Elena did want it -- ever listen to [her]."

Damon definitely held it against Matt in the season premiere, but he eases up on the QB a bit by episode two. That said, they're not about to embark on an epic bromance any time soon. "Damon and Matt have never really seen eye-to-eye," Zach says. "This just puts the cherry on it, although I think they'd make a good little team."tvd-zach-claire-please-kiss.jpg

Don't hold your breath for that one, kids.

Ever since breaking up with Caroline (apparently, for Matt, fangs are a turn-off) he's had a heck of a dry spell in the romance department... but it's hard to ignore the undeniable sparks that flew between him and Rebekah last season. You know, before she ran him off a bridge, destroyed his truck, and left him and one of his best friends to drown. Oops?

"Rebekah and Matt have been a little bit ... hot and cold," Zach says. "I think you can expect to see Rebekah trying to kind of clean things up with Matt and get him to forgive her. 'I got upset. My bad, I tried to kill you. But you survived! So now we can flirt again!' I feel like it's going to continue to be the same dance, though, because at the end of the day, in some weird way, Matt can wrap his head around why Rebekah would do that."

While we were on set, we watched Zach filming some sweet scenes with Grace Phipps, who plays Mystic Falls newbie April Young. While April may have eyes for Matt, though, Zach tells us that Matt views her more as a little sister than a potential love interest. (We'll see about that!)

Of course, we had to ask Zach how things are going on set without his buddy Matt Davis around -- since we've certainly been missing Alaric's incomparable presence on screen. "I'm going to cry right now," he jokes. "I don't really care... No, I miss him a lot. I miss you, buddy! Of course we miss him, but I'm also super proud of him. He's kicking butt and taking names up there. You know we talk all the time. He's doing exactly what he's supposed to be doing."

Ian Somerhalder on Missing Alaric, Loving Elena and Finding Compassion

Damon Salvatore misses his best friend. That much is evident in the Vampire Diaries clip from tomorrow night's "Memorial."
And the character isn't alone.
"F-ck Damon. I miss Alaric," Ian Somerhalder told me over the phone yesterday. "I miss Matt Davis in my life."

The second (TERRIFIC!) episode of The Vampire Diaries Season 4 will give viewers multiple opportunities to see how his drinking buddy's passing affects Damon, but Somerhalder says the loss goes beyond a lack of someone to meet at the Grill.
"Losing Alaric signifies something bigger, it raises much bigger questions in Damon's world," the actor explains. "He wonders: 'Why are you dead? What did I do to contribute to it?'"
And it sets Damon off on a dark, lonely path.
"He's missing his best bro, but he's also telling those around him: 'I tried so hard to make you guys see my point of view. And now what's happened? Alaric is dead. Elena is dead.' Damon was right. And now he's saying: 'This is who I am. I tried to play nice and know what? It didn't work.'"
Yes, it's a return to the cynical side ("This is me. Take it or leave it," Somerhalder describes his character's current outlook) of Damon Salvatore, which the star has made clear over the years is his preferred role to play.
"You can't just be a cool lunatic all the time, I understand that. You need to grow and change and evolve," Somerhalder says of the journey Damon has taken. "Still, you are who you are at your core."
And who is that person?
Damon has always had "ill intentions, but he had them for righteous reasons," Somerhalder says. "He believes in what he's doing and he enjoys it so much… whether he's ripping your throat out or saving a kitten from a tree, Damon has that same smile on his face. It's sadistic but true. And the only person he isn't that way around is Elena."
So does that mean Somerhalder is glad he didn't get the girl? Wouldn't a relationship with Elena set Damon down a much lighter path? Somerhalder needed a moment to contemplate that question.
"If you look at why Damon came back to Mystic Falls, it was for love. Even being a sort of maniacal kind of killer at times, he wants what we all want: to be loved."

Spoiler From TV Guide - 17th October 2012

Stefan and Elena seem like they're in a good place on The Vampire Diaries. Will they stay that way?

Those two are definitely in it for the long haul. But while they had some meaningful conversations about their future in the premiere, this week's episode will bring trouble to paradise. Expect Elena and Stefan to clash after a particular "interaction" between Elena and Damon. "It's something unintentionally hurtful she does to Stefan that she has to then deal with the repercussions of," executive producer Julie Plec says.

5 More Teases For 4x02 'Memorial'

Stefan's Animal Diet.

What's a man to do when the woman he loves gets turned into a vampire?  Stefan wants to bypass the nearly endless years of torment for Elena if she drinks human blood and starts her off on a purely animal blood diet.  At first, the experience of hunting is a foreign to Elena, but the pair get into it when Elena appreciates how much her newfound abilities turns Stefan on.  Unfortunately, their romp in the woods quickly becomes soured (in a very literal way) when Elena can't hold down the deer blood she just drank.  Stefan suggests they try again and again, but they always get the same result.  What's a girl to do?

Damon's Human Diet.

Well, the girl turns to Damon for suggestions.  Of course, we know that he pushes her the people-friendly diet, but Elena's determined to avoid snaking on humans.  Fortunately, Damon eventually has a solution to this problem.  And while Delena fans might be happy with it, Stefan most certainly is not.

Connor, The Vampire Slayer.

After members of the Council blew themselves up in last week's episode, a new vampire hunter arrives in town.  And if you thought last week's Council was serious, you haven't seen anything yet.  Connor immediately identities the vampires he wants to kill.  He's clever, he's ruthless and he's not afraid to make sacrifices for the greater good.  During a memorial for the recently-deceased Council members, Connor sets up a plan to entrap and identify the various vampires in town.  The question is whether they're all strong enough to resist.  Matt becomes a hero at the memorial, proving once again that he would do anything to help his friends.

The Price of Power.

After last week's disastrous attempt at dark magic, Bonnie is still feeling the side effects of her failed spell and the destruction of her grandmother's spirit. But when Stefan comes by asking for a favor to help identify Connor's origins, Bonnie is determined to help.

Memorial.

Elena's recent death and the deaths of the Council members prompt the group to take a look back at all of those who have died in this crazy supernatural world they live in, leading to a touching impromptu memorial and a nice surprise ending that will likely leave you all with a tear in your eye and a smile on your face.

  • Rudy also has an intense chat with Bonnie’s new mentor, Professor Shane.
  • Rudy makes it very clear to Shane that he doesn’t trust him and knows about his past missteps at his previous college.
  • Rudy, a Whitmore College Board member, also threatens to have Shane’s job if his intentions with Bonnie are anything other than academic, leaving Shane completely blindsided.

Spoiler From EW - 15th October 2012

The first episode of The Vampire Diaries had me bawling. Damon scoop would make me feel a LOT better.

If episode 1 had you all weepy, just wait until the end of the second, when Damon has an unforgettable moment with someone of great importance to him. It will make you cry, laugh, and have a whole lot of hope for more moments like this to come. (This will all make more sense Thursday. I promise.)

Spoiler From Zap2it - 15th October 2012

Yes, you did see Stefan punching Damon in the trailer for this week's episode. We have to say, Damon kind of deserves it -- he gets Stefan's fist to his face after telling Stefan something he knows will hurt his feelings. That said, the punch is the end of the fight, not the beginning of it. By the end of the episode, Stefan makes sure Damon is included in an extremely touching gesture. Awww.
