Julie Plec and Michael Narducci Interview - Consequences For Elena And More

When did you know Connor would be Elena's first kill?
Michael Narducci:
We talked in April ... and we kind of knew it would be in Episode 5 and it would be Connor. I've been on the show awhile and something I struggle with is that I want Elena to do more things, I want her to not be a damsel in distress and I want her to go out and protect her brother. So we thought if Jeremy is in jeopardy and if Matt, her high school sweetheart, is in jeopardy what is Elena going to do? I really loved when she turns to Damon and says, "I'm a monster too," and she is now; she's dangerous. I don't think she [went] into those tunnels with the intention of killing Connor, I think she [went] in those tunnels with the intention of saying, "Stay the hell away from my family!" But Connor is ready to kill a vampire at any moment and when he stakes her, she loses it. Vampires do go off and Elena is one of them so we have to show that dark side too of what it is to be a vampire.

What will the repercussions of the kill be?
Julie Plec:
Well, just in the shadow of giving the first glimpse of hope for Elena's predicament [i.e. the cure] she herself was the one that literally and metaphorically killed her hope without realizing it. So the consequences of that first kill are pretty profound. We [also] learn for the first time that killing a hunter comes with a price and there's a weird Dostoyevsky consequence of it all that takes her to some dark, dark places.

What does this possible cure mean?
Plec: It's going to make our characters ask questions about themselves, what they want and what would they do in order to get it ... And who would go to great lengths to make sure it ultimately didn't fall into the wrong hands?

Tell us about Jeremy's new "destiny" as a hunter.
Plec: Right now it's just the beginning of being awakened. Connor had told him he was a potential and so this is a hint that perhaps Connor was speaking the truth. This mark and what it means and where it leads and what Jeremy will need to do to complete it is an origin story [that will be] told to its end.

What is Professor Shane's deal?
Plec:
Professor Shane starts to cross paths with our group next week with some answers, but whether they're legit or not remains to be seen. [As for Bonnie], there's this mentor that's appearing in her life just as she's in her own darkest place where she feels like she's lost connection to her magic. Here's this very wise and connected professor saying to her, "Hey let me teach you how to get back in touch with who you really are," so there's an allure to that. But as we've seen, he does have an alternate agenda he's hiding. We just don't know if it's in her best interest or not.

What is April's purpose?
Plec: April for us is a fun human folly and a reminder that this town exists and there are people in this town that know nothing and can get caught up in it in the same way Elena and her friends did in Season 1. So it's a nice fresh set of eyes. April is also our vessel to start getting answers to that really surprising twist at the end of the first episode. That mystery has yet to be solved, and she will be part of putting the pieces together.
Narducci: April is a marker to see how far [Elena] has gone from when she was human. You look at April and that's kind of how Elena was in Season 1, and Elena is absolutely not there anymore so it's kind of shocking to hold that mirror up.

What is Tyler's mission moving forward?
Narducci:
Tyler is someone who beat the sire bond and now he's free and looks around at all these other hybrids that Klaus is using to do whatever and as a hero would say, "This is wrong I should do something about it." Haley is someone who helps him act on that heroic desire.
Plec: Tyler is going to insight a revolution.

The journals returned! (Which we teased two months ago.) Why bring them back now?
Plec: It is the title of the show so we always knew we wanted it to exist out there in the ether. What we've said since Season 1 is that a diary is your most personal place to give your most personal messages. When you're in a functional relationship and feel like you have something to share, you can share it with a friend or a lover and Elena has always had that. [But] right now she feels more lost and alone than she ever has and it felt like the right time for her to need to have a voice for that because she doesn't feel like she can admit this to her friends and loved ones  that she hates who she's become. So it felt like the right time. It's not going to be part of the week-to-week format by any means. We'll visit it at times when it feels like they need to have a private thought that we need to be invited into moreso than it being part of the narrative every day.

OK, when are Katherine and Elijah coming back, and is this the last we've seen of Connor?
Plec:
We have not seen the last of [Katherine] and believe it or not we have not seen completely totally the last of Connor. We're talking Episode 16 and 17 and Elijah's name is all over the board. The scripts aren't written yet but that's our game plan, to have him come in as we get closer to the last chapter of the year.

Interview With Todd Williams, Julie Plec and Michael Narducci

Would you consider killing vampires to be an addiction for Connor, because it gives him more tattoos?

Todd Williams: Well, from what I've come to understand, Connor, he's actually in a way a victim of the tattoo. People assume that that's all that Connor wants to do is kill vampires, and he derives some kind of pleasure from it, but it's quite the opposite. He's a very tortured man, and he has a lot of questions. And he didn't even know his origins and his background, and he's in search for so many things that there was a level of desperation that you could see in “The Killer.” I just want to know that everything that I've done to be worth it, and this tattoo, he's not able to be compelled by a vampire, but it kind of compels him to do what he does.

Alaric was introduced as a vampire hunter — but this is obviously a different thing. Will we go into that distinction?

Julie Plec: Yeah. I mean this is the mythology of the Brotherhood of The Five, and this mark and what it means and where it leads. This is the origin story of the vampire hunter told to its end, as opposed to Alaric [Matt Davis] who's really pissed off and had a good stake.

What purpose does April serve?
Julie Plec: Well, April, for us, is like a fun, little human folly because when we first started the season, we wanted a character — now that most, if not all of our heroes, as we call them, are supernatural — a reminder that this town exists. And there are people in this town that know nothing and that can get caught up in this the same way that Elena [Nina Dobrev] and her friends got caught up in it Season 1. So it's a nice fresh set of eyes. She's the Aunt Jenna [Sara Canning].

Does she have a connection to Connor? Can you talk about that and what her father was really up to when he blew up the Council?
Julie Plec: Well, when all is said and done, April is our vessel to start getting some answers about that really surprising twist of events at the end of the first episode. So that mystery is yet to be solved, and she will be a part of putting the pieces together.

Michael Narducci: I think it's tough to play that role. You're a normal person in a show that's all about vampires, but it's important too because Elena's swimming in this big ocean, and April is a marker to see how far she's gone from when she was human. And you look at April, and that's kind of what Elena was in Season 1, and Elena's absolutely not there anymore. So it's kind of shocking to hold that mirror up and see where you are.

You guys planted the seeds of a friendship for April and Rebekah, then you took Rebekah away. Can you talk about if she's coming back, and how that friendship is going to play out?

Julie Plec: That will all pay off down the road with a vengeance; that's the best I can do for you there.

The search for the cure, obviously, is a personal story even though Elena doesn't know it yet. But obviously, the consequences of it existing would be huge for the entire universe of the show and every character having the decision to make whether they want it or not. Are we going to start to see that filtering out, the idea of just what the major consequences would be if that was real?

Julie Plec: Here's what I'll say about that. First of all, everything you said is a hundred percent right, in that it's going to ask a lot of questions. It's going to make our characters ask a lot of questions about themselves, about what they would want. Would they want it? What would they do in order to get it? It's going to make them realize, "Wait a second. Klaus [Joseph Morgan] is an immortal hybrid who's been relatively indestructible. Is there some way to make him destructible?"

There's going to be a whole lot of questions asked about what could happen if this cure were to be uncovered, and who would go to great lengths to make sure ultimately that it didn't fall into the wrong hands. That all being said, our mythologies, season to season, always have a nice sort of beginning. And right now, this announcement of the cure, at this point in the narrative is equal to Katherine [Nina Dobrev] wants a moon stone, is equal to Damon’s [Ian Somerhalder] looking for crystal. It's just the beginning. It's the beginning of a lot of roads that we can travel down.

When you kill an Original and that whole line of vampires dies, in that same vein, if an Original takes the cure, the whole line of vampires are cured? Is that something you guys are delving into?

Julie Plec: That is without a question what our characters are going to be asking at a certain point. What the answer is, I can't tell you, but that's definitely a valid question.

I think some major deaths have been teased. Is there anything you can elaborate?
Julie Plec: You know, that's what Nina said. Nina gets on Ryan Seacrest and is like, ‘Two people are dying this year.’ And like, statistically, yeah, maybe. We do tend to trim the ranks of the family once a year, but she doesn't know what she's talking about, so I can't really comment on it.

Look, here's the thing. We don't look at death as gratuitous on this show in that we like to kill characters with very profound purpose. And profound purpose is one of those things that we like to do a lot. I'm not saying that everybody's safe. I'm just saying that that number she sort of threw out there was based on incomplete information.

What can you say about the Miss Mystic Falls dance. Is that your musical episode?

Julie Plec: I wish. No, the Miss Mystic Falls event is actually a nice — I mean we've had a pretty dark run of it for these last couple of episodes. Elena's certainly been in a pretty dark place. Next week, we kind of hit dark, rock bottom, and then, the episode that follows is like this episode of light and pretty and sun.

Michael Narducci: Still pretty dark.

Julie Plec: Yeah, I mean it's always going to be f***ed up and twisted, but it's a nice refreshing change of pace. It gets us back to a little bit of romance, a little bit of good Mystic Falls events at their finest. And it evokes a memory of Season 1 very deliberately of what was going on in the triangle back then, too.

Is this going to be the fifth dance that Rebekah's missed?

Julie Plec: Yeah. It's not really a dance. They do the thing with the bow and the curtsy, the art of the non-touch.

Michael Narducci: It's interesting, because a lot of your questions are things we do talk about in the writer's room. We to talk about Rebekah missing all these dances, and what do we do about that and what's the best way for that character.

What can we tease about the holiday episode that's coming up?

Julie Plec: Yeah, it's not Christmas. People who try to follow time on our show, their heads will explode in rapid succession, one neuron at a time. So we try not to be too specific about the timeline of the show, but this is the first time in four years where we've actually aired close enough to Christmas where we thought, ‘Well, gosh. Wouldn't it be fun to have at least a little bit of holiday spirit woven through the episode?’

So it's a charity event that the town is throwing with a winter wonderland theme that gives us that feeling of holidays have come to Mystic Falls. And the episode is very much about loyalty and relationships and some betrayals and all that kind of drama that tends to come around family holidays.

6 Teases For 'The Killer'

This week's "Vampire Diaries" episode, "The Killer," was written by Michael Narducci. If you'll recall, he's the guy who penned last season's high school horror show "The Reckoning," one of the most-loved episodes of the series -- and he doesn't let us down with "The Killer."

In the episode, vampire hunter Connor takes Matt, April, and Jeremy hostage at The Grill, luring their vampire friends in to come save them... and to step right into his impressive trap. The best thing about the episode is that it showcases Elena as a strong, capable lead. The combination of her vampire strength and the skills she honed with Alaric get put to good use.

"I've been on the show a little while, and something that I struggle with is I want Elena to domore things," Narducci says, noting that this was an episode he was particularly excited to write. "I want her to not be a damsel in distress. I want her to go out and protect her brother. We thought, if Jeremy's in jeopardy [and] we have Matt who is her high school sweetheart in jeopardy, what's Elena going to do? Is she going to wait for all these other people to get involved and save everyone for her, or will she get involved and do something?"

Her choices in this episode are tough, but they give us good reason to root for our girl again, which we kind of needed after she got a little woe-is-me last week.

In addition to awesome tough vampire Elena, here are six more details you can look forward to in this week's episode

1. At one point in the episode, Damon and Elena will be on a bed together. Don't get too excited, though... they're not exactly happy to be there. (Though, she is straddling him, so you can probably get some mileage out of the scene for your various Tumblr creations. We'll be trawling your #Delena tag, so get creative.)

2. Caroline puts her super-vamp hearing to good use and overhears Klaus threaten Tyler with the knowledge of what happened between Tyler and Hayley in the mountains. Needless to say, Caroline isn't pleased -- and we get some great interaction between Candice Accola and Phoebe Tonkin as a result.

3. Look for the return of the actual, literal vampire diaries. With no one to talk to about all their inner turmoil, since they're keeping it from each other, Stefan and Elena both go back to writing in their journals. It's definitely a sign of the growing distance between them.

4. Jeremy's going to find out that he was compelled pretty quickly, and he's really not going to be happy about it. In fact, he's sick and tired of the vampire secrets in town -- and at the end of the episode, he makes a move to protect April from it.

5. Stefan and Damon's little "fight" escalates in this episode, big time, as Stefan goes to drastic measure to keep the cure a secret. Both guys get pretty violent, but by the end of the episode, Damon and Stefan's bond with each other is the most stable relationship in town.

6. Professor Shane definitely has a dangerous agenda, but he's also very motivated to protect Bonnie. She spends the entire episode with him, trying to get her magic mojo back... and she's more vulnerable to manipulation than you might think.

Interview With Todd Williams

Connor is a character who, at the moment, is very easy to dislike. Is there something in his backstory that would surprise us?
That’s what this episode is about, basically shedding some light as to why Connor’s doing what he’s doing. It’s not as black and white as, Oh, vampires. I want to kill ‘em. That’s it. There’s definitely a story there, and this episode makes him a little more three-dimensional, just in terms of his humanity. You find out more about his relationship with Professor Shane and exactly what they’re trying to get from one another, why they have this alliance.
Connor loves his explosions. Judging from the promo, we’ll be seeing more of that, too.
Look, Connor’s gonna do what Connor does best, which is wreckin’ shops. [Laughs] He’s a man who has a lot of questions that he needs answers to, and the hostage situation is a scenario created to get those answers.
What did you know about Connor when you got cast?
They are very hush-hush over at TVD. When I initially got the audition, there wasn’t much of a breakdown of the character. All it showed was that he was formerly a Navy SEAL and that he was intense. I didn’t know what I was going to be doing on the show until I actually got to Atlanta. I got to sit down with supervising producer Chris Grismer and showrunner Julie Plec, and they gave me some backstory as to who Connor was, but they’re still finding out things about him themselves. So each episode, I’d find out more information about him, and each time, it just made me more excited because I’ve never done a character like this before. I remember the first week, I’m getting yanked out of the truck by Ian [Somerhalder], and we’re sittin’ there on the ground, and I’m shootin’ him, and I felt like an action star. I was like, this isso fun. I was havin’ such a blast.
Was there a moment when you felt like, okay, I’m really a part of this show now? I’m thinking perhaps filming the shirtless torture scene in last week’s episode?
[Laughs] You know, I think that’s just a thing that everybody has to do on that show. I remember when I was in a fitting, I was talking to people saying, “Is there a shirtless scene coming up?” I had a feeling it was coming up, and I was hearing rumors. So I was hittin’ the gym every day, and then finally when it came up, yeah, I was very nervous. It just seems like a rite of passage on that show — every guy is gonna have to take his shirt off. You just hope that it’s received well, which it was. So mission accomplished.
Will we see Connor tortured again?
You mean on the rack, or just tortured period? [Laughs]
Just tortured, period.
It’s more of an internal torture. No external torture.
Last question: You’ve done a fair amount of TV (The Chicago CodeIn Plain SightTiltThird Watch). Are there any traditions on the Vampire Diaries set you’ve found particularly fun?
Traditions on set… [Thinks] They have Cheesesteak Friday. That’s always delicious. I’d always take two or three of those. I’m a lover of food, so that’s pretty much what’s gonna stick out.
